Astros whistleblower Mike Fiers says he’s received death threats for uncovering scandal

Fans have sent death threats to Mike Fiers for uncovering the Astros’ cheating scheme.

The Astros cheating scandal is a storyline that will dominate the upcoming 2020 MLB season, as players have been seething over the Astros’ response while commissioner Rob Manfred continues to bungle the situation. Yet for all the ire directed towards the Astros organization for cheating their way to a World Series title, many fans and players are upset that former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers uncovered the scandal at all.

Fiers revealed to The Athletic that the Astros used cameras in the outfield to steal signs during the 2017 season, which ended with Houston winning a World Series. Fiers did not participate in the playoffs that year, but did receive a World Series ring for his contributions in the regular season. Fiers was recently called a “snitch” by Red Sox legend David Ortiz, and has been slammed by Pedro Martinez and other players for breaking an unwritten rule of baseball and outing thing that happen in the clubhouse.

Some fans, unsurprisingly, have crossed the line in attacking Fiers. In an interview at A’s Spring Training, Fiers told the San Francisco Chronicle that he’s received death threats since speaking out about the Astros.

Via the San Francisco Chronicle:

“Whatever, I don’t care. I’ve dealt with a lot of death threats before. It’s just another thing on my plate.”

Fiers also said that he does not plan to give up his World Series ring unless ordered to by MLB, a measure fans and players alike have called for from Manfred.
