The Washington Redskins made some big splashes recently, notably releasing a veteran mainstay on a big contract like Josh Norman.
And it seemed the Redskins got out in front of the big wave of NFL cuts, which is interesting given how new the coaching staff is and the fact the front office got reshuffled too.
Rivera explained the process to The Athletic’s Ben Standig and Jourdan Rodrigue:
“The biggest thing that we did in terms of evaluation was we literally came together on Feb. 10 as a coaching staff and as a pro scouting department and personnel department, and we evaluated our entire roster. Based off of that … we started making the moves.”
This was also quite the interesting addition to the chat: “We have a good young group of guys, and we’re just looking at things and deciding whether or not we want to go that way, continue to get younger — or, do we have to sit there and sprinkle in some veteran guys?”
It should be exciting to Redskins fans that the Rivera-led front is already making so many moves. So should the fact he appears to have the freedom to remake the roster however he sees fit.
Where things go from now is hard to say. It’s clear veteran adds in free agency are on the table. Seemingly, so are more cuts to get younger.
And look, normally this might not be the most exciting news for an NFL team. But the Redskins have a chance to undergo a serious roster overhaul under the guidance of one of the NFL’s most-respected coaches. Meaning, even this qualifies as exciting.
