With still over two months remaining until the 2020 NFL draft arrives, there are several ways the Indianapolis Colts can go about using the No. 13 pick in the first round.
Of course, free agency will have plenty to do with what prospects or positions might be higher on the board for Indy, but there is a chance they can add more talent to the interior defensive line.
In a mock draft from CBS Sports, the Colts were able to snag defensive tackle Derrick Brown out of Auburn with their first-round pick.
Chris Ballard loves getting physical in the trenches without spending a ton of money and Brown is the best interior defensive lineman in the draft this year. Would be a slam-dunk pick for the Colts.
There are essentially two positions the Colts are likely to target with that pick. Either they find a quarterback worth taking a shot on or they add to the defensive line—both the interior and edge are needs for Indy.
Even with quarterback Jordan Love still on the board, it would be difficult to pass up a talent like Brown. Arguably the top interior defensive lineman in the draft, Brown would be a strong addition to a position of major need for the Colts.
Here is the scouting report on Brown from Jacob Infante of Draft Wire:
A physical defender with size, strength and speed, Brown fits the prototype of a three-down interior defensive lineman. He’s still a bit of a work in progress, but his hand usage and his physical attributes should see him get drafted pretty early when the draft rolls around.
The Colts only got 6.5 of their 41 team sacks from the interior defensive line. Only 17 of their 82 quarterback hits came from the defensive line. It’s a major need for the Colts.
Will Brown even be available for the Colts? Who knows. But if he is, it would be very difficult to pass that up.
