Every team that faces the Chiefs next season will have extra motivation to knock off the defending Super Bowl champions. The Broncos, one of Kansas City’s divisional rivals, will have even more motivation on top of that.
Denver has lost nine straight games against the Chiefs, including 30-6 and 23-3 defeats last season. Broncos coach Vic Fangio was asked during a press conference last week how Denver can beat Kansas City in 2020.
“They’ve lost eight games in the last two years,” Fangio said. “All of those games except one, the other team has scored 31 or more points, I believe. That paints a little picture there for you. The other game that they lost, the winning team only scored 19 points, but they ran the ball 45 times in that game. That was a different formula.
“It’s got to be something in between there. You’ve got to be able to slow them down somewhat, which to some degree we did a little bit. But obviously you’re going to have to score some points. That goes without saying.”
It’s an obvious statement — you have to score points to top KC — but it’s one the Broncos plan to follow up on. Denver brought in Pat Shurmur as the team’s new offensive coordinator this offseason and the Broncos’ offense should make strides with quarterback Drew Lock entering his second year.
This fall, Denver will look to snap it’s losing streak against the Chiefs.
