News: Irvin clears air, Cowboys trade ammunition, Prescott’s warning

The news and notes for all things Dallas Cowboys on February 10, 2020

The Dallas Cowboys are the most popular team in the NFL, meaning in a sea of big business, they are the beacon that shines brighter than any ship. With that comes incredible in-depth coverage of the team from all angles, but it also comes with a constant stream of click-bait from all corners of the internet. This time it came from one of their own, former wide receiver Michael Irvin who got a rumor started that the Cowboys themselves had kicked the tires on a move for New England Patriots Tom Brady.

In other news, linebacker Sean Lee will be returning to the field in 2020, but it’s uncertain if the star will be on his helmet. There’s more of the same with regards to mock drafts and Dallas lands in the middle of the pack of too-soon power rankings. While the Cowboys finished 8-8, they may be a prime candidate for regression, though in this case, that’s a good thing.

Michael Irvin earths can of worms he opened with Brady-to-Cowboys Prescott talk :: Cowboys Wire

Hall of Famer Michael Irvin may have put his foot in his mouth when he mentioned Tom Brady and the Dallas Cowboys in the same sentence during a radio interview over the weekend. He ultimately clarified that nobody in Dallas had said anything to him about it, but it was too late. In a slow weekend for news, the tidbit took over like wildfire.

Ranking Every NFL Team by Its Trade Ammunition for 2020 Offseason :: Bleacher Report

The Cowboys don’t have a lot to work with if they want to make a splash move in the upcoming NFL Draft. Despite the pending free agents the team is still poised to have a strong roster but moving capital for one player may not be the most prudent of moves. This list has Dallas coming in at No. 23.

The Cowboys also don’t own a ton of draft capital. Dallas owns half a dozen selections—beginning with the 17th pick in Round 1. The Cowboys should also recoup the Day 3 pick they traded thanks to a compensatory pick for the loss of wide receiver Cole Beasley.

Dallas won’t be trying to remake the roster this offseason so much as hold together what it already has while bolstering a weak spot or two.

The article fails to mention the Cowboys are expected to receive a fifth-round comp pick for  losing WR Cole Beasley in 2019 free agency.

Touchdown Wire’s way-too-early 2020 power rankings :: USA Today

As Rodney Dangerfield used to say, “I don’t get no respect.” Well, neither do the Dallas Cowboys in this edition of power rankings, coming in at No. 14. In all fairness, no respect is exactly what missing the playoffs with an 8-8 record gets a team. There’s some eyebrow raising teams listed ahead of the Cowboys but until they are able to prove they’re for real, which is at least seven months away, don’t expect much in the way of respect.

Some of the dates are subject to change, like training camp, so maybe don’t book that family trip to Oxnard quite yet. In just over a month, the Hall of Fame game will be announced, and there’s a good chance that Dallas will be headed to Ohio with two inductees slated for August inauguration.

Reid’s 2020 NFL Mock Draft 5.0 :: The Draft Network

Draft enthusiasts never tire of mock draft season. They may tire, however, with the same players being slotted to the Dallas Cowboys week after week. That’s likely not going to change until after the combine is complete and free agency is well under way, so this week is much of the same with the Cowboys selecting LSU safety Grant Delpit at pick No. 17 and defensive tackle Justin Madubuike out of Texas A&M at No. 51. These picks certainly fill a need, even if it doesn’t scratch the itch for an original take.

Dak Prescott is about to get paid. How he and Cowboys handle the next few weeks will determine a lot :: The Athletic

The Athletic’s Bob Sturm offers up his take on the contract status of quarterback Dak Prescott. He wisely disregards the recent scuttlebutt of trading the Cowboys signal caller but does caution Prescott against getting every penny he can in his first ever foray into free agency. To be fair, Sturm doesn’t believe that Prescott isn’t worth the money that he presumably wants, but instead that the amount of goodwill lost among fans and pressure gained might outweigh the financial windfall.

Sean Lee wants to play football in 2020, will Cowboys want him? :: Cowboys Wire

If it’s up to linebacker Sean Lee, he’ll be back on the field in 2020. Whether that’s with the Cowboys or not remains to be seen, and will depend as much on the new coaching staff as it will upon the salary requirements of the 11-year-veteran. With Leighton Vander Esch’s health up in the air heading into the off-season, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to keep the veteran around.
