Tua Tagovailoa, one of the top passers in the 2020 NFL draft, took a significant step toward the big day Monday thanks to an injury update.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Tagovailoa’s medical checks on his injured hip came back clean:
“The Alabama quarterback’s three-month CT scan on his fractured hip was as positive as possible, revealing a healed hip, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per sources informed of the situation. The hip and its range of motion is good, but it’ll likely be another month before Tagovailoa is cleared for football activities, Rapoport added.”
That’s as good as the news can get for a guy once considered the top outright passer in the 2020 draft. That crown has since moved to Joe Burrow, but some such as ESPN’s Todd McShay would still argue Tagovailoa is the better prospect.
Monday’s news means Tagovailoa has a better chance of passing the combine checks without any issues. It’s hard to imagine that would mean he’s in play for the Bengals at No. 1, but he’s certainly in the conversation if they move around for some reason.
Tagovailoa’s agent, by the way, has noted he’d like the Bengals to go for Burrow, not Tagovailoa.
