The Indianapolis Colts are hoping to put the 2019 season behind them after they failed to make the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
Despite getting off to a 5-2 start to the campaign, the Colts crumbled mightily over the final two months of the season. They seemed to be on their way to a playoff spot, but a 2-7 finish in the final nine games doomed any chances they had.
They finished the season as a middle-of-the-pack team and at No. 19 in Touchdown Wire’s final power rankings for the 2019 season.
Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett started the season pretty well after the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck. But it didn’t last. Defenses started loading up on running back Marlon Mack and challenging Brissett to beat them. He wasn’t able to do that often enough. Then, Brissett didn’t get a ringing endorsement from owner Jim Irsay after the season. Irsay indicated the team likely will draft a quarterback. That’s a slap in the face to Brissett. But the fact is he’s probably better suited to be a backup than a starter.
With the struggles coming from the quarterback position and the massive injuries that took a toll on both sides of the ball, the Colts weren’t able to sustain the success they had at the beginning of the season.
Even so, the Colts got a good look at where they really need to make improvements. Some of those areas of weakness were masked by the talent of Andrew Luck. But when you have an average quarterback under center, those weaknesses are exposed.
Now, the Colts head into one of the biggest offseasons in recent history—one that might feature them looking to bring in a new quarterback via the draft.
Regardless, there are plenty of changes they need to make this offseason in order to get back into playoff contention.
