The 49ers need to go out and get Tom Brady

Tom Brady to… San Francisco? Let’s do it.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

The San Francisco 49ers are just a few days removed from their fourth-quarter collapse against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 54. The sting of that loss is still very fresh and still very painful, as it should be.

But their future starts right now and that future should include John Lynch doing whatever he can do to… bring Tom Brady to the 49ers.

Because lets get weird, San Francisco.

Brady, of course, is going to be a free agent very soon and rumors have been flying all over the place as to where he might call home next season. While I said last month that the right thing to do would be for the Patriots to bring him back, maybe the right thing for Brady would be a fresh start – and a brief stay – with his boyhood team.

My friend and colleague Steven Ruiz did a great job Tuesday of explaining why the 49ers would be smart to think about trading Jimmy Garoppolo. Brady’s former backup is a pretty good QB but can he be a great one? Can he be the guy to win you a Super Bowl? Steven is among those who doesn’t think so and suggests the 49ers try to get Cam Newton if the former MVP can get healthy.

That would be a fun option for San Francisco, but lets get back to Brady. You have to think the six-time Super Bowl champ would love working under an offensive mastermind like Kyle Shanahan.

I called this a brief stay because Brady really probably only has two seasons left in his 42-year-old bones, which is fine.

The NFL is a win now league, you can’t be overly concerned about trying to grow a talent over the years and wondering if it will pan out. If you have the tools to be a Super Bowl winning team right now, you do whatever it takes to go for it.

That’s exactly what the 49ers have right now – powered by a special defense that can carry a team to the Super Bowl. What they need is a quarterback who can be counted on down the stretch of a big game to make plays with his arm, which is something Brady can still do – he did win a Super Bowl just a year ago.

Garoppolo isn’t a terrible QB – far from it. But he showed at times during this season that he couldn’t always be depended on in key moments. Many teams would be very happy to have him under center. But many teams aren’t contenders for the Super Bowl.

San Francisco is a contender and can be for a few more years.

Lynch loves Brady. Now is his chance to go get No. 12 and see if they can’t make some history together back where Brady grew up.

Tuesday’s biggest winner: Travis Kelce.

The Kansas City Chiefs star tight end grew up dreaming of drinking out of the Stanley Cup. Well, on the team’s flight home after Super Bowl 54 he found and awesome way to chug a beer off the Lombardi Trophy. Well done, sir.
