The Carolina Panthers’ new coaching staff under Matt Rhule is going to have a mix of college and pro experience. According to Joe Person at the Athletic, today Rhule is interviewing two former NFL head coaches for the team’s quarterbacks coach job: Ben McAdoo and Mike McCoy.
McAdoo’s first job in the NFL was with the Saints as their offensive quality control coordinator in 2004. Then, he held the same position for the 49ers as well as coaching the offensive line. From there, he moved to Green Bay, where he served as tight ends coach for six years before moving up to quarterbacks coach. He was hired as the Giants’ offensive coordinator in 2014 promoted to head coach in 2016.
After a strong first season which saw New York go 11-5, McAdoo’s Giants started out the year 2-10 in 2017, leading to his firing.
As for McCoy, he has extensive experience with the Panthers. He was with the organization from 2000-2008, working in a variety of roles on offense. McCoy then moved on to be the Broncos offensive coordinator, followed by a head coach gig with the-then San Diego Chargers from 2013-2016.
McCoy compiled a 27-37 record as their coach.
Neither one will be expected to lead the whole team, so those records are irrelevant. If one gets hired, what will matter is what they get out of Cam Newton in what promises to be an innovative Joe Brady offense.
