UFC 246: Conor McGregor says Floyd Mayweather agreed to an MMA fight

Conor McGregor wants to get back in a boxing ring for a rematch with Floyd Mayweather.

Conor McGregor is only a few days away from his return to the octagon at UFC 246 on Saturday night, but he’s already got another bout in mind – a rematch with undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather, who defeated McGregor by TKO in 2017.

McGregor will face Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at UFC 246, and the Irish superstar has said he hopes to fight three times in 2020. McGregor sat down with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani for a pre-fight interview, and predicted that he and Mayweather will eventually meet again in a boxing ring. McGregor also claimed that Maywether verbally agreed to participate in an MMA bout against McGregor as a part of their deal for the first fight.

“I know I’d beat Floyd, I’d beat Floyd if we rematched. When we rematch. He’s not going to do a mixed martial arts bout like he said. It was supposed to be. It was supposed to be me boxing, then we’ll do a mixed martial arts bout. That was what was said, and it came out of his mouth as well. It was not written, but it was a verbal agreement, right? And obviously that’s not going to happen, and I’m not even… I’m not going to push him on that either. But I would like to box him, I think that would be a good rematch.”

You can make a case that Floyd Mayweather is the greatest fighter of his era in any discipline, but it’s incredibly obvious why he backed out of such an agreement. Even the best boxer in the world would get destroyed by an expert in different fighting styles if those are allowed, and Mayweather likely wouldn’t sign off on a bout where he’d be embarrassed, even if it guaranteed in another colossal payday. Instead, he might get to cash in on a second McGregor boxing match where he’ll be the overwhelming favorite.
