Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs winning saved us from a mediocre AFC championship game

You know Titans-Texans would have been much worse.

Thank you, Kansas City Chiefs.

There was a point in the middle of the AFC divisional playoff matchup — right around the time it was 24-0 — that NFL fans everywhere who weren’t Chiefs or Houston Texans die-hards began thinking about what the conference title game would look like.

It would have been Tennessee Titans and the Texans battling it out for a chance to play in the Super Bowl. And not to rub salt in the wound for Houston fans, but that wouldn’t have been ideal.

Look at what Mahomes and the Chiefs did in that comeback effort. They put up 51 POINTS. Mahomes is one of the NFL’s most explosive players and a human highlight reel. On any given play, he could fling it 60 yards on the fly to a receiver, adjust mid-throw to sling it side-armed, and make something out of nothing while on the run.

The Texans? Well, you saw what happened. Bill O’Brien made some extremely questionable calls and the defense was Swiss cheese the rest of the night.

Their opponent would have been the Titans, and although you have to step back and marvel at their late-season run all the way to the AFC title game, passing is still king in the NFL. Tennessee just got through two games in which Ryan Tannehill passed for UNDER 100 YARDS IN BOTH CONTESTS! I’m loving Derrick Henry’s magic as much as anyone, but that doesn’t mean it’s the most exciting football to watch minute to minute. A less exciting team playing a sloppy one? No thank you.

So let’s all be happy that the Chiefs came back. Texans-Titans would have been a disappointment for those of us without rooting interests in both teams.
