The Miami Dolphins have signed eight young players to futures contracts with the team for the 2020 offseason. What is a futures contract? It effectively serves as a designation for an NFL team that a player will be on their expanded 90-man roster when the league calendar opens in mid-March — but the players signed to futures contracts won’t count against the team’s 53-man roster or salary cap for the remainder of the prior league season.
Effectively, the Dolphins called dibs. The eight players Miami inked to futures contracts are below:
- LB Jake Carlock
- LB Terrill Hanks
- WR Andy Jones
- TE Chris Myarick
- OT Cikdi Okeke
- DL Durval Queiroz Neto
- WR T.J. Rahming
- WR Terry Wright
If this list of talent seems underwhelming, know that futures contracts are typically reserved for practice squad players and young talents who would otherwise sit on the fringe of an active 53-man roster during the NFL’s regular season. Miami saw promise out of several of these talents during the 2019 preseason, including TE Chris Myarick and LB Terrill Hanks.
DL Durval Queiroz Neto will be one to pull for this offseason — the Brazilian footballer filled a special international vacancy on Miami’s 2019 practice squad and is an active part of the NFL’s recent initiatives to recruit more international talent to the game. Seeing him get an extended look from the Dolphins is an exciting development, as it insinuates there may be something there after all.
