Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett met with team owner Jerry Jones for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, and while the team is reportedly expected to end the Garrett era after a disastrous 8-8 season ended without a trip to the playoffs, Garrett will remain in his position for at least one more day. NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported Tuesday that Garrett met with Jones, but that there is still no resolution on Garrett’s future.

I’m being told there will likely be no news today on the Jason Garrett front. Meeting is over. Remaining coaches and staffers in the building heading home 🤷🏼♀️

Jason Garrett will have yet another discussion with Jerry & Stephen Jones before his status is resolved, a source said. It’s unclear at this time when that discussion will take place. https://t.co/DCwD31YKih

Garrett’s contract expires on January 14th, and given Jones’ affinity for Garrett, it’s possible that the team is hoping to sever ties with Garrett without officially firing him early, at the cost of missing out on coaching candidates that may sign with other teams during that period. Fans and analysts continue to dunk on the Cowboys for dragging out a process that was long overdue.
Jason Garrett is just going to meet with Jerry Jones for two hours a day every day with no resolution until September at which point he will walk directly to the stadium and start coaching the opener.

My favorite theory for Jason Garrett news delay is Cowboys haven't decided on a sponsor.
Jason Garrett moving on presented by Sleep Number? Miller Lite? Reliant Energy? So many options

Jason Garrett has missed the playoffs six of the nine years he has been head coach of America's Team. That's all you need to know, Jerry.

If you delay a decision long enough all the top coaching candidates will take other jobs and you can keep Jason Garrett pic.twitter.com/hK512Ja3lf
