The Miami Dolphins have been spending the last few months monitoring the 2020 NFL Draft order, all with the knowledge that where Miami lands in the final order would play a large role in how aggressive the Dolphins would need to be in order to secure their players of choice.
And while the perfect scenario would have the Dolphins picking with the 1st overall pick, the Dolphins overachieved too much for that to be a realistic outcome — courtesy to the strong coaching efforts of Brian Flores and company. But now the Dolphins do indeed know where the first two of their three 2020 1st-round NFL Draft picks falls in the draft order. And based on how things were materializing no less than 3 weeks ago, Miami should be thrilled with their placement.
Miami’s own 1st-round pick will be slotted 5th in the 2020 NFL Draft order, trailing the Cincinnati Bengals (2-14), Washington Redskins (3-13), Detroit Lions (3-12-1) and the New York Giants (4-12).
Miami’s second 1st-round pick, which comes courtesy of the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be slotted 18th in the 2020 NFL Draft order. The Steelers were red hot and appeared to be on the cusp of the AFC’s 6th-seed until tripping up last week against the New York Jets to fall to 8-7 on the season. Pittsburgh fell to Baltimore in Week 17 to drop to 8-8 and lock Miami into a second top-20 NFL Draft selection in the aftermath of the team’s trade for DB Minkah Fitzpatrick in September.
The Dolphins will now begin to plan for the final order and watch carefully to see where the Houston Texans’ 1st-round pick falls as the playoffs kick off next weekend.
