With just two games left on their schedule and the playoffs out of sight, it will be mock draft season for the Jacksonville Jaguars soon and several other teams. With that being the case, ESPN’s Todd McShay decided to get an early jump on things with his first 2020 mock draft.
In it, he slotted the Jags Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons and Alabama defensive lineman Raekwon Davis to help begin the rebuild that should occur on defense.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars
Isaiah Simmons, OLB, Clemson
Simmons is a perfect fit for today’s NFL and is simply too talented to pass on here. He can pass rush off the edge, and he can drop in coverage. He does it all. The defensive line is stacked, but Simmons would help the second level of the Jags’ front seven as a replacement for Telvin Smith.
19. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Los Angeles Rams)
Raekwon Davis, DT, Alabama
With little value in the way of offensive line here, let’s continue building a top-notch front seven after taking Simmons in the top 10. Davis might not be a high-end pass-rusher, but he is disruptive and a physical freak who comes with versatility. And former first-rounder Taven Bryan hasn’t worked out in the middle. The Jags’ run defense is giving up 140-plus yards on the ground per game (fourth most in the NFL).
While the Jags have a big need at linebacker, using a top-10 pick on the position wouldn’t be wise in my book. Additionally, there were several players available at more premium positions like Auburn defensive lineman Derrick Brown, Louisiana State safety Grant Delpit, Stanford cornerback Paulson Adebo, Clemson receiver Tee Higgins and Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert (if the new regime wants their own signal-caller) to name a few. The aforementioned defensive names in particular could provide immediate upgrades to the team as the defense has weaknesses in the interior and secondary.
McShay’s second selection for Raekwon Davis makes a little more sense. At 6-foot-7, 312-pounds, he has unreal length and offers some traits similar to that of Taven Bryan. He also flourishes with pressing to disengage with lineman, which has helped him tremendously against the run. With teams running at will against the Jags, Davis would be a welcomed addition to the team, especially with Marcell Dareus potentially being let go and Campbell not getting any younger.
