With their embarrassing 34-7 loss on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints (11-3), the Indianapolis Colts (6-8) are officially eliminated from playoff contention for the 2019 season.
There was already an extremely slim chance for the Colts to make the playoffs even entering this game. But their season hit an all-time low getting dominated on the road against the Saints.
After a 5-2 start to the season, which included big wins against the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans, the Colts stumbled in an immaculate way. Following the primetime loss on Monday night, the Colts have now lost six of their last seven games.
It has been a wild season, to say the least for the Colts. From Andrew Luck shockingly retiring three weeks before the season to the regression of quarterback Jacoby Brissett as the season went on, the Colts went from a potential divisional-winner to focusing on the offseason with two games left.
With the Colts officially eliminated from the playoffs, they have now failed to make the postseason in four out of their last five seasons. They also haven’t won the AFC South since the 2014 season when they made it to the AFC Championship game.
There are a number of objectives the Colts will have this offseason. They have to figure out what to do at the quarterback position. It’s clear Brissett isn’t the long-term answer under center. Do they use the 2020 draft to find his potential replacement?
The Colts also need to find more depth on the interior defensive line, add high-end talent to the wide receiver room and continue beefing up the talent in the cornerback room.
This is an important offseason for the Colts, and the focus officially shifts to the upcoming months after the dismal loss against the Saints on Monday night.
