Why Dolphins shouldn’t go all offense in the 1st-round of 2020 draft

The Miami Dolphins should look to draft at least one defensive talent in the 1st-round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Miami Dolphins are facing the biggest offseason in recent franchise history in just a few weeks. Miami will be tasked with hunting down the right fits for an organization that is desperate to claw their way back into relevance — a place they haven’t consistently been in nearly two decades. Part of that path includes free agency of course, but the 2020 NFL Draft is going to be viewed as the critical juncture for the Dolphins.

There, Miami will continue to target young talent and be able to do so in surplus — the team is scheduled to have a ton of picks, including three of the top-25 overall selections.

Many forecasts for Miami feature the Dolphins drafting quarterbacks, offensive tackles, centers, running backs and wide receivers with these three premiere picks — and who can blame them? With Miami’s offensive depth chart in its current state, the Dolphins will definitely need to overhaul the entire group this offseason.

But that shouldn’t feature an all offensive 1st-round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Why? Because lest we forget, Brian Flores is a defensive minded head coach at heart. And in this year’s draft, there’s going to be plentiful talent available at Miami’s areas of need on the defensive side of the football, too — namely at cornerback and outside pass rusher.

So Flores, who has been very hands on with GM Chris Grier in the team’s personnel decision making to this point, will probably develop eyes for a few defensive players along the way and want to prioritize a critical missing component to his defense. That could be a starter opposite Xavien Howard in the secondary. It could be a blue chip pass rusher or chess piece to move all over the field.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor will the 2020 Miami Dolphins. There’s only so many ways to check boxes and Flores would be well within his rights to look for critical upgrades to his defensive unit as well. Miami’s needs across all fronts will see to it that Miami’s talent acquisition this offseason is diverse and unpredictable.

So don’t count on the assumed blitz on the offense next April.
