As the Pelicans continue to slide during a nine-game losing streak, more eyes turn to Zion Williamson. While the No. 1 pick has yet to make his way back onto the court, his return is seen as a light at the end of the tunnel during dark days for New Orleans.
No matter how many eyes may be directed Williamson’s way, though, the team has remained adamant on not rushing him back. Lonzo Ball spoke after practice on Tuesday about Williamson and the advice he’s given him during his rehab.
I told him not to rush it. I want to make sure he comes back and he’s comfortable playing out there, not thinking about it at all. Whenever that happens, he’ll be back. And we’ll love to get him back. He’s the number one pick. Looking forward to him doing big things for us.
While it may have only been the preseason, Williamson was stellar and the Pelicans looked an entirely different side. Without him this season, the team has lacked a punch that Williamson brought offensively.
Defensively, though, may be where the Pelicans miss him most as his energy, intensity level and ability to fly across the court all were valuable skillsets he brought to the court. Without him, the Pelicans have the fourth-worst defense in the league.
Ball also spoke about what the team can expect from Williamson once he returns.
I think what you saw is what you’re going to get. I told him play the same way when he gets back. Don’t change. Keep putting pressure on the rim. When guys collapse, kick out for open threes.
…
You saw what he did. He’s 20 and 10 every night, pretty much We could definitely use that.
Unfortunately, with Williamson even yet to step onto the practice court, it appears unlikely the former Duke forward will make his debut in 2019. But when he finally does, expect him to make a big and much-needed impact.
