The Miami Dolphins now sit at 3-10 on the season and in last place in the AFC East, an expected position during the Dolphins’ rebuilding campaign. Miami is among a herd of several teams jostling for draft positioning at the top of the NFL Draft order and appear primed for a dramatic finish in the race for draft positioning. In the final three weeks of this 2019 NFL season, each of the the NFL’s team with 10+ losses will have at least one matchup with another team in the top four of the NFL Draft order.
This is both good and bad for Miami, as there’s guaranteed to be enough wins to create some separation between these squads — but Miami will now have several cracks at locking in additional wins that could be seen as detrimental to their positioning in the draft order.
Miami will play the 2-10 New York Giants next week and the 1-12 Cincinnati Bengals the week after. The Giants, who play tomorrow on Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles, will also play a game against the 3-10 Washington Redskins in Week 16.
As things currently stand, the top of the NFL Draft order reads as follows:
- Cincinnati Bengals (1-12)
- New York Giants (2-10)
- Washington Redskins (3-10)
- Miami Dolphins (3-10)
- Detroit Lions (3-9-1)
If Miami were to lose both games against the Giants and the Bengals, their ability to draft second in the draft order could come down to tiebreakers in strength of schedule. The Dolphins also have an outside chance of securing the #1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, but it would require the team to lose out and the Bengals to win two of their final three games against the Patriots, Dolphins and Browns.
With so much left to be played among the worst of the worst in the NFL this season, it is shaping up to be quite a finish in the race for draft positioning.
