We have spent the better part of the past couple days praising Steven Sims Jr., the undrafted rookie in Washington who provided a spark on Sunday with a 91-yard kick return for a touchdown, giving the Redskins their first lead in weeks.
Now the NFL is heaping praise to the young player out of Kansas, naming him the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Sims Jr. finished the game with 124 return yards and one touchdown, and he nearly had two, as his first return of the day was close to breaking out for a long one to open the game.
While Sims Jr. has proved to be highly adept on kickoffs, the Redskins have refrained from putting him in at punt returner, opting to put WR Trey Quinn back deep instead. However, the coaching staff said after Sunday’s game that they would take a harder look at putting Sims back there, as they acknowledge that they need to get him the ball more.
Congratulations to Sims. Hopefully, it’s the first Player of the Week award of many.
