8 Trade-up options back into 1st round for Cowboys

After looking at what Dallas might gain in a trade back from No. 17, here’s a look at what they might use to trade up from No. 51.

Adding a Player

OK, so what if Dallas sees this year as a mulligan and has much more regard for 2021 picks because they believe there will be a full offseason and will look to maximize on the full length of a rookie contract?

Could the Cowboys throw a player in? Theoretically, yes. When surveying the roster, things become much harder.

Seattle Seahawks (No. 27), Baltimore Ravens (No. 28) and Teneessee Titan (No. 29) editors said their teams could want to move down as well. Would they be interested in a player, too?

Seahawks (27) – 680 pts
Ravens (28) – 660 pts
Titans (29) – 640 pts

The most viable members of the Cowboys roster who won’t have a great deal of signing bonus acceleration tied to trading them away are the members of the secondary from the 2017 draft. The only problem there is Byron Jones departed in free agency, can they really stand to part with anyone else? What about elsewhere on the team?

Chidobe Awuzie

Awuzie is an intriguing possibility, but only if Dallas were to land C.J. Henderson at No. 17; then this could be a move, especially if the new coaching staff reviewed the tape and isn’t keen on giving him No. 1 duties. If an acquiring team had an opportunity to work out an extension with him before the trade, Awuzie might be worth a mid-third, but we’ll value him at a late-third and at that point, it’s tough to see the Cowboys moving on from him unless Mike Nolan just hated the guy and didn’t think he’d be able to start for him; though stranger things have happened.

Value: 100 points

Xavier Woods

Woods is the most likely candidate, as both he and 2020 free agency signing Ha Ha Clinton-Dix are better in a centerfield role, but have the versatility to play in the slot or in the box. Woods could command a fourth round pick value.

Value: 70 points

Tyrone Crawford

Crawford is a team leader with versatility up and down the defensive line. A team looking for a rotational player with this skillset could see him as valuable. We’ll say late-fourth capital.

Value: 40 points

Option 3: Cowboys send 2.19 (390) + 3.18 (180) + Awuzie (100) + Crawford (40) to Seahawks for 1.27 (680) + 4.38 (34). 710 points for 714 points.

Option 4: Cowboys send 2.19 (390) + 3.18 (180) + Awuzie (100) to Ravens for 1.27 (660). 670 points for 660 points.

Option 5: Cowboys send 2.19 (390) + 3.18 (180) + Woods (70) to Titans for 1.29 (640). 640 points for 640 points.

But more than likely, giving up players from a rebuilding defense or dipping into their 2021 bag aren’t what Dallas would like to do most. That likely leads them to the remaining three teams which wouldn’t require mortgaging the Cowboys’ future.
