6 Cowboys in danger of release due to Covid-19 impact on NFL

First we dive into how the pandemic is likely going to impact the fortunes of the NFL. Then we dive into what that could look like for several Cowboys. How the coronavirus and lost revenue will trickle down to how rosters are formed in 2020, 2021.

This one hurts to type. Without the pandemic, I don’t think moving on from Smith would enter the thoughts of the Cowboys front office for at least the next couple of years. However, trading him for a first-round draft pick and the retail-talent-at-wholesale-price aspect might be a realm of possibility in this particular light.

Say camp happens in some form and Connor Williams, Connor McGovern and rookie Tyler Biadasz all look really good. Dallas could experiment with playing La’el Collins at left tackle, McGovern at left guard, Biadasz at center and Williams at right tackle next to Zack Martin. Newly-signed Cam Erving would be the swing tackle with Joe Looney the swing interior along with depth from players like Brandon Knight and Adam Redmond, or whomever bubbles up to show promise.

Saving Smith’s $20.5 million in salary over the next two seasons and getting a quality first-round pick in exchange doesn’t seem like as bad of an idea as it would’ve been four months ago. It’s an extreme take, but this could be an extreme time.
