57 days (and counting) until UCLA Football 2024 kickoff

The countdown continues.

The countdown to kickoff for UCLA Bruins football continues. We are down to 57 days until the start of the season. Of course, as we mentioned, the first game is on August 31st in Hawaii. Today, with 57 days to go, we are going to honor and discuss the 1957 UCLA Bruins football team.

The 1957 UCLA Bruins football team, led by head coach Red Sanders finished the season with an 8-2 record. The Bruins would see this as the final season for their head coach Red Sanders, as he died of a heart attack just before the start of the 1958 season. Sanders was also famous for this quote:

Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.

The Bruins captains were Joe Harper and Jim Dawson. UCLA started the season with wins at home over Air Force and Illinois. The Bruins were then shut out on the road at Oregon.

Wins over Washington and Oregon State moved them to 4-1. The second and final loss came on October 26th at Stanford. UCLA would go on to win their final four games over California, Washington State, Pacific, and USC.

Don Long was the quarterback of the Bruins, as he finished with just shy of 500 yards. Chuck Kendall led the team in rushing with 388, and Dick Wallen had 303 receiving yards to lead the team.
