5 free-agents the Raiders could sign to improve the roster before training camp

The Raiders have done a fantastic job of improving their roster in free agency and the draft, there is always work to be done. With just over a month until training camp begins, there are still several veterans on the open market that could help the Raiders this season. Here are five players the Raiders should consider signing before training camp opens:

1. DE Jadeveon Clowney

The best free-agent available, by far, is Jadeveon Clowney. While it is not clear what type of deal he is after, Clowney is a player who could dramatically upgrade the Raiders’ defense.

While injuries have been a problem over the last few years, he is a dominant run defender who can help free up other pass-rushers with the amount of attention he draws from offensive tackles. Adding Clowney to this defense would help make this team a legitimate playoff contender in the AFC.

2. DE Everson Griffen

If the Raiders are wanting to add more depth to their defensive line, but are worried about Clowney’s injury history, look no further than Everson Griffen.

Griffen (32) is older than Clowney (27), but he has been far more durable and productive than the former No. 1 pick. In his last 40 starts, Griffen has totaled 62 quarterback hits to go along with 26.5 sacks for the Vikings.

Griffen would give the Raiders a four-time Pro Bowl defensive end to pair with youngsters Maxx Crosby and Clelin Ferrell. Adding a player of this caliber to the defensive line would drastically improve the entire defense.

3. OT Kelvin Beachum

The Raiders’ offensive line is set for the 2020 season, but they do have some depth issues at offensive tackle. The Raiders are hoping that either Brandon Parker or David Sharpe can develop into an adequate swing tackle, but the team could look to upgrade the position in free agency.

One potential candidate to fill that role is Kelvin Beachum, who has started 99 games in the NFL at left tackle, right tackle and left guard in the NFL. He started 13 games for the Jets last season, grading out as an average tackle, according to Pro Football Focus. While he isn’t spectacular, he is an upgrade over Parket and Sharpe and that should be enough for the Raiders to consider adding him to the roster.

4. DE/DT Michael Bennett

Defensive line coach Rod Marinelli loves pass-rushers who can play multiple positions and Michael Bennett is a perfect fit in his scheme. Bennett played nine games with the Cowboys last season and recorded 11 quarterback hits and four sacks.

While he wouldn’t be a starter for the Raiders, he would be an excellent backup to Ferrell and Crosby and could play inside at defensive tackle on pass-rushing downs.

5. LB Mychal Kendricks

The Raiders have done a fantastic job of improving their linebacker room this offseason, but they could continue to improve their overall depth. Mychal Kendricks could help in that area after starting 14 games with the Seahawks last season.

At 29 years old, Kendricks is still one of the best coverage linebackers in the league and brings Super Bowl experience to a team that could use it. Kendricks would make a ton of sense as the team’s third linebacker, backing up Cory Littleton and Nick Kwiatkoski.
