49ers waive 3 players following NFL draft

The San Francisco 49ers waived a trio of players from their 90-man roster after addressing some needs in the draft.

The 49ers on Tuesday announced the clearing of three roster spots when they waived cornerback Adonis Alexander, wide receiver Matt Cole and safety Chris Edwards.

Alexander joined the team in January on Reserve/Future contract and didn’t make it to the offseason program.

Cole was with the club for one game last season after signing in late December. He played 16 special teams snaps against Seattle in Week 17 and notched a pair of tackles.

Edwards has had multiple stints with the 49ers although he’s never appeared in a game for them. He signed in late November last year and wound up spending the final month of the season on the practice squad.

The 49ers need depth at all three of those positions, and they addressed some of that this offseason, so it’s not a huge surprise to see them clear out some options who weren’t likely to make a significant impact on the roster.
