49ers vs. Falcons: 3 things that stood out in the 3rd quarter

The 49ers defense took over in the third quarter Sunday.

The 49ers got a 46-yard field goal from Robbie Gould to provide all the scoring in the third quarter. They took a 13-10 lead into the final frame.

Here’s what stood out in the third quarter:

49ers bailed out by Falcons special teams miscues

Atlanta had two huge special teams plays to start the second half, but both were negated by penalties. Younghoe Koo started the half with a surprise onside kick that he recovered, but it was negated by an illegal formation penalty. Then on a 49ers punt, Kenjon Barber returned a Mitch Wishnowsky punt 41 yards only to have it called back for a block in the back. This half could look different if not for the Atlanta penalties.

A sack, finally

The 49ers went the entire first half without a sack, but finally broke through the Atlanta line in the third. Sheldon Day got to Matt Ryan on a first-and-15 at the Atlanta 13 yard-line to essentially kill the drive. The sack came at big time for the defense and the 49ers were able to take the punt and kick a field goal on the following drive.

A no-impact quarter by Julio Jones

The defense for the 49ers improved from the second quarter and the lack of Julio Jones may have helped. After a second quarter that saw Jones get seven targets, Matt Ryan targeted the receiver just twice in the third quarter and the defense held Atlanta to minus-one yard.
