49ers sign TE MyCole Pruitt to one-year deal

The 49ers added some TE depth and may have a plan to expand MyCole Pruitt’s receiving role.

The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday announced the addition of TE MyCole Pruitt on a one-year contract. His signing comes a day after the team released TE Daniel Helm and opened a roster spot on the 90-man roster.

Pruitt, 29, earned his first NFL job as a fifth-round pick of the Vikings in the 2015 draft. He spent his rookie year and part of his second season in Minnesota before the Bears signed him off the Vikings’ practice squad. He spent the 2017 season Houston, and then landed with the Titans in 2018 where he spent the next three seasons.

Most of his work in the NFL has come as a blocker, but his abilities as a receiver started to emerge in Tennessee where he caught 20 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns in 42 games. His 21 games prior to that had netted just 12 receptions for 102 yards.

The 49ers may not have enough room to fit Pruitt on their roster behind George Kittle, Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner. However, if he can continue expanding his role as a pass catcher while excelling as a run blocker, he could work his way into a roster spot out of camp.
