The 49ers on Tuesday announced a handful of roster moves in the lead up to their second week of the season. Running back Elijah Mitchell was officially placed on Injured Reserve, and safety Tashaun Gipson was signed off the practice squad to fill the vacated roster spot. They also signed OL Keith Ismael to their practice squad, and released OL Keaton Sutherland and WR Connor Wedington in a corresponding move. RB Marlon Mack is expected to take the additional practice squad spot.
Mitchell is nursing a sprained MCL which prompted the IR stint. He’ll be out a minimum of four weeks, but his injury is expected to keep him out upwards of two months.
Gipson won the starting free safety job with Jimmie Ward out despite joining the 49ers in the final week of the preseason. He was elevated from the practice squad for Week 1, but now he’ll occupy a 53-man roster spot instead.
Ismael, 24, was a fifth-round pick of Washington in the 2020 draft. He played in 18 games with five starts at center. He’ll conceivably give the 49ers some in-house depth in the middle of their offensive line.
