The 49ers on Monday made an interesting early-offseason addition to their roster. They announced linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball re-signed with the club on a one-year deal.
McCrary-Ball signed with San Francisco as an undrafted rookie following last year’s draft. He wound up spending the entire season on the club’s practice squad after his release at final roster cuts.
He had a nice preseason last year with eight tackles in three games. McCrary-Ball also had an interception in the preseason opener.
With Azeez Al-Shaair set for free agency, the 49ers will have a void to fill at the Sam linebacker spot. Oren Burks and restricted free agent Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles are both candidates to fill that vacancy, but McCrary-Ball could be in the mix as well after a full year on the practice squad.
