The 49ers on Monday announced the release of cornerback Saivion Smith following his first and only game with the club Sunday in Cincinnati.
Smith signed with the 49ers’ practice squad in early November and was elevated to the active roster for the club’s Week 14 contest against the Bengals. Injuries and Dontae Johnson’s absence opened the door for an additional CB to make his way onto the roster.
The 49ers chose to promote Smith to the active roster rather than just elevating him, which would’ve allowed him to revert back to the practice squad after the contest. Releasing him vacates a roster spot for San Francisco.
Smith played on 11 special teams snaps and didn’t record a tackle against the Bengals.
