The 49ers for the second consecutive week have chosen to protect practice squad running back JaMycal Hasty from being signed away by another team.
Two is the maximum number of times a team can protect a player on its practice squad, so the 49ers will have to either add Hasty to their 53-man roster or roll the dice and hope another team doesn’t scoop him up after Sunday night’s game vs. the Philadelphia Eagles.
The undrafted rookie out of Baylor carried twice for nine yards last week in his NFL debut. He was promoted from the practice squad because Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman were both out. Coleman is on Injured Reserve for at least two more weeks.
Protecting Hasty indicates the 49ers will promote him again against Philadelphia. Mostert is day-to-day with a knee injury he suffered vs. the Jets, so having Mostert up as a fourth running back makes sense.
