49ers make decision on Christian McCaffrey IR stint

The All-Pro running back will miss at least four weeks.

After missing most of training camp, all of the preseason and the first two games of the 2024 campaign, the San Francisco 49ers have made the decision to place All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey on the injured reserve.

McCaffrey will now miss at least four weeks as he nurses an ankle/Achilles injury.

After ruling out McCaffrey from their second game of the 2024 season against the Minnesota Vikings, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Friday that an IR stint for the running back was something being considered.

McCaffrey is coming off an All-Pro campaign, leading the NFL in rushing with a career-best 1459 yards. The Stanford Cardinal product added 21 total touchdowns for the 49ers on their run to the Super Bowl.

With McCaffrey set to miss extended time, Jordan Mason will likely receive a bulk of the starting responsibilities in the 49ers backfield. Mason started Week 1 and produced a breakout performance with 147 yards and a touchdown against the New York Jets.

Mason will help lead the 49ers against the Vikings on Sunday for Week 2. The 49ers and Vikings are set to kickoff at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday in Minnesota.
