49ers injury update is bad news for 2 star running backs

Both of the 49ers top two running backs suffered injuries against the Bills on Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers will be without their top two running backs for the remainder of the regular season after the pair of rushers suffered injuries on Sunday Night Football against the Buffalo Bills.

When speaking with members of the media on Monday in a conference call, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Christian McCaffrey suffered a PCL injury against the Bills. Shanahan said McCaffrey’s injury won’t require surgery, but his recovery time will be around six weeks. Shanahan said the 49ers will be adding McCaffrey to the injured reserve.

McCaffrey had a strong start to the game against the Bills, rushing for 53 yards on seven carries before exiting the game with a knee injury. McCaffrey missed the first eight weeks of the season with an achilles injury. In four games, McCaffrey has rushed for 202 yards on 50 carries.

Along with McCaffrey, fellow running back Jordan Mason will also be added to the injured reserve. Shanahan revealed Mason suffered a high ankle sprain that will require the breakout back to go on the injured reserve.

Mason entered the starting lineup at the start of the season while McCaffrey dealt with an Achilles injury. Mason took over the 49ers backfield on fire, rushing for 789 yards and three touchdowns during the 2024 campaign.

With both McCaffrey and Mason sidelined, rookie rusher Isaac Guerendo will likely take over the 49ers backfield. The fourth-round pick out of Louisville has rushed for 246 yards on 42 carries with two touchdowns, including a 15-yard rushing touchdown against the Bills.

The Chicago Bears will travel to Santa Clara for a contest against the 49ers on Sunday.
