49ers depth chart: 2020 CB battle has long-term implications

The 49ers have some short and long-term questions to iron out at cornerback this season. Their depth chart at that spot isn’t deep.

The 49ers put together the NFL’s top pass defense last year with just one Pro Bowler in the secondary.

San Francisco for the second consecutive season didn’t make any major changes to its cornerback group. That would’ve been fine if the team was set for the short and long term, but they don’t have a second established starting corner on the outside, and their depth is less than stellar.

How the cornerback group shakes out will be a huge determining factor in the team’s defensive success this season. Here’s what our projection for the wide open depth chart looks like going into camp.

Richard Sherman

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

Sherman is one of the cornerbacks entering the final year of his contract. He turned 32 this offseason, but he just turned in an All-Pro season and looks to be in line to continue playing at high level. His Super Bowl performance wasn’t his best, but the larger sample size of a full season leaves little concern about his viability as a shutdown corner in 2020. Sherman is still one of the best players at his position even if he does experience a small dip in production.
