The 49ers’ injury situation made it imperative to make some changes to the active roster prior to their Week 3 showdown with the New York Giants. Saturday the team announced running back Tevin Coleman was heading to Injured Reserve with a knee injury. Center Hroniss Grasu, running back JaMycal Hasty and linebacker Joe Walker were all promoted to the active roster from the practice squad.
Coleman suffered a knee sprain during the 49ers’ Week 2 win over the Jets. His placement on IR means he’ll be sidelined for at least three weeks.
Hasty will likely stay on the active roster until Coleman is set to return. The 49ers made Hasty one of their undrafted rookie signings after this year’s draft. He played well in camp but couldn’t crack the active roster.
Grasu has been up for each of the first three games as added depth on the interior of the offensive line. He started the opener while Ben Garland was nursing an ankle injury.
Walker was called up to replace Dre Greenlaw, who’s out with a quadricep injury. The 49ers signed Walker as a free agent this offseason. He’s primarily been a special teams contributor in his career, but he started 11 games last season at linebacker for Arizona.
