3-star defensive back signs with UNC football over SEC program

UNC signs three-star defensive back despite rumors that he could flip on signing day!

College football’s Class of 2025 officially has started Early Signing Day. You can track North Carolina signings on our Tar Heels Wire Tracker.

North Carolina is expected to make a splash by signing those who have given verbal commitments. However, sometimes, it is an opportunity for players to flip from one school to the next, which is not the case here.

Javion Butts has officially signed with North Carolina per Inside Carolina.

The 6-foot-0 safety from Jones County school in Gray, Georgia, is the No. 54 safety in the country with a 247Sports score of 88. His composite score of the same is similar at .8789 rising him to the No. 53 ranked safety in the nation.

According to On3, Butts is a four-star prospect with a rating of 90 and the No. 32 ranked safety in the class and the No. 44 ranked player in Georgia.

Butts committed verbally to North Carolina on April 7, 2024. However, since his commitment, he has taken a recorded, yet unofficial, visit to Missouri, leaving doubt in his recruitment.

The Tar Heels held off the SEC school to secure their fifth recruit signing of the day. Butts will be an excellent fit into the depth chart that will see starters Jakeen Harris and Antavious Lane both leaving this season.

He will have his work cut out for him when he gets to Chapel Hill along with a new, unidentified coach that he will be serving under despite being recruited by UNC’s former coach Mack Brown.
