Every year, there are a handful of surprising players that make the final roster. This year should be no different as the Raiders have added a significant amount of talent and depth to their roster.
Today, we are taking a look at three down-the-roster players who could find a roster spot before Week 1. So without further ado, here are three underdogs to keep an eye on during training camp and the preseason.
1. RB Rod Smith
Rod Smith actually was on the Raiders’ roster late in the 2020 season, but he is going to have an uphill climb to make the team once again this year. But what Smith has going for him is versatility. Smith has started games at running back and fullback in the NFL and is a talented pass catcher.
But where Smith really has a leg up over any potential No. 3 running back is his ability to contribute on special teams. Smith can return kicks and play on just about every special team’s unit. That is incredibly valuable for a player who likely won’t see a ton of offensive snaps behind Josh Jacobs and Jalen Richard.
Expect Smith to find a roster spot in 2020, either on the Raiders or somewhere else, due to his versatility. He’s just too talented of a player not to make someone’s roster.
2. LB Justin Phillips
Another former Dallas Cowboys that could make the roster is linebacker Justin Phillips. Like Smith, Phillips spent some time on the Raiders’ roster last season, albeit on the practice squad. The team ultimately re-signed him after the 2020 NFL Draft as added depth.
Phillips performed well during the preseason last year and has proven to be a pretty good athlete. He has shown the ability to run sideline to sideline and has the versatility to play all three linebacker positions.
Entering his second season in the NFL, he should have a much better feel of what it takes to stick on an active roster. Don’t be surprised if Phillips makes the Raiders as a depth/special teams player.
3. LB/SS Javin White
Another hybrid linebacker that could make his way onto the 55-man roster is undrafted free agent Javin White from UNLV. White played almost exclusively as a strong safety in college, but the expectation is that he will likely kick down to linebacker in the NFL.
White is a fantastic athlete who has shown the ability to be a star in coverage. If he can quickly get up to the speed of the NFL, he could develop into a quality nickel linebacker. But before that can happen, White will need to contribute on special teams. If that happens, look for him to find a spot on the final roster.
