3 things to watch for against Penn State

Michigan football takes on a team with similar struggles this season in Penn State. What are the three things to watch for this Saturday?

2. Does Michigan figure out its kicker issue?

Before the 2020 season began for Michigan football, one position that was a huge question was kicker. Who would get the start? Jake Moody and Quinn Nordin started battling for the job in late 2018 when Moody came in and made a school-record six field goals against the Hoosiers. In 2019, Harbaugh set both up in a kicking rotation. That rotation seemed to have changed to a starting gig for Nordin as the season concluded.

Jumping to the 2020 season, Moody was the Big Ten Week 1 starter. Against Minnesota, Moody went 0-for-3 on field goals, and Harbaugh quickly made the switch to Nordin, who had missed the game due to injury. He made his two attempts against Michigan State and Wisconsin. When it came time to kick against Rutgers, though, he fell apart and went 0-for-3.

So halfway into the season, Michigan still doesn’t have an answer for who its kicker should be. Moody has yet to make a field goal. Nordin has made two, but he’s missed three in a row. Heading into its matchup against Penn State, whoever comes out to kick a field goal or extra-point attempt must be the guy that can finish this season with the job. Changing kickers routinely never gives one a chance to gain confidence and get in a groove.
