Punt returners
With a light practice day, there wasn’t much noteworthy football going on, but one video in particular surfaced via WGR-550 radio and it potentially gave some surprise insight into the Bills’ punt returning situation.
In regard to non-surprises, we had Andre Roberts out there fielding punts with the returners. In addition, there was Isaiah McKenzie. Both have done so pretty frequently in the NFL and that skill could help those two in regard to making the final roster in a packed wide receiver room. Roberts has been an All-Pro and Pro Bowl returner, while McKenzie has struggled with fumbles.
But the most interesting note is the third guy we’ve got here. In the video via WGR’s Sal Capaccio, the player taking part in the drill in the dark jersey is cornerback Levi Wallace, something he’s not too accustom to doing. Or at least hasn’t in the past for the Bills. Perhaps this could signal he’s going to be in a depth role on defense behind Josh Norman at the No 2 cornerback position for the Bills as well? The Bills traditionally don’t have full-time starters in this role. Think Micah Hyde, he’s a return man, but also the team’s starting safety. But regardless, Wallace is the only No. 39 on the team’s roster currently, so that’s something.
Here’s the video:
This is super interesting. The punt returners had rolled-up towels under their arm pits, I’m assuming to make sure they keep their elbows/arms tight while catching the punt. #BillsCamp pic.twitter.com/rz5teCfVor
