3 surprises from the Steelers 2019 stats

Here are some numbers that we found interesting looking back at 2019.

I’ve spent the last couple of days digging through the 2019 Pittsburgh Steelers stats. This was a season when everything got flipped on its head. The defense went from a liability to elite and the offense went from unstoppable to unwatchable.

Here are a few numbers that really stood out to me from last season.

13.6

This is the average yards per reception combined between Diontae Johnson, James Washington and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Honest that is a very respectable number considering how hamstrung the deep passing game was all season. The bad news is those three players combined for only 145 receptions and 1,967 receiving yards. The receivers took a lot of heat this season but this type of disparity is clearly a product of questionable quarterback play.

93.5

This was the kicking percentage for Chris Boswell on field goals. For the season, Boswell only missed two tries and was definitely back to his old self. Unfortunately, the offense was so bad, oftentimes they were never even in a position to let Boswell have a shot at putting up points.

5.5

This isn’t just the average yards per attempt for the Steelers woeful passing offense but also the yards per attempt the Steelers defense gave up. If you want to point to the biggest impact the trade to acquire Minkah Fitzpatrick was, look at this number. The Steelers defense was notorious for allowing big plays, especially in the passing game. The addition of Fitzpatrick changed all that.
