3. Limit Big Plays
Oklahoma’s defense has done a great job against the run in 2024. It is allowing 96 yards per game against the run and just 2.4 yards per carry, which ranks fourth in the nation.
The Sooners defense is playing really good ball, even in pass coverage, but it has given up some big plays in the passing game. Houston, Tulane and Tennessee hit OU for at least one big play through the air. Whether it was a miscommunication, blown coverage or being beaten, that’s the one area where teams have found some success.
The Auburn Tigers have several players capable of creating big plays in the passing game, led by Keandre Lambert-Smith, who is averaging 28.5 yards per reception and has five touchdowns in four games.
In a game that should be a one-score game on paper, an explosive play can be the difference between winning and losing. While the turnover battle will be key, keeping Auburn from beating the secondary over the top will make as big of a difference.
The Sooners need to force Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne drive the field on them. He and the Tigers have been turnover-prone. The more plays they run, the more likely they’ll make a mistake or turn the ball over. Don’t give them anything easy.
