The 49ers can put themselves in position to secure a No. 1 seed in Week 17 with a win over the Rams in Week 16.
While the season doesn’t end if they lose Saturday, their climb to Super Bowl LIV becomes much steeper. Here are three keys to get the 49ers back in the win column:
Interior offensive line’s best game of the year
Kickstarting a 49ers offense that struggled a week ago will start up front. Left guard Laken Tomlinson, center Ben Garland and either Daniel Brunskill or Mike Person at right guard need to control Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald and ensure he’s not wrecking plays before they develop. Pressure up the middle kills rushes and pass attempts, so getting strong showings from those three interior offensive linemen is vital.
Where are the receivers
Deebo Samuel, Emmanuel Sanders and Kendrick Bourne simply can’t be as unproductive as they were against the Falcons. That trio of receivers combined for four catches and 49 yards. Take out Samuel’s lone catch for 29 yards and those numbers drop to three and 20. If even one of Samuel, Sanders and Bourne can get loose, the 49ers should be able to move the ball against a banged up Rams secondary.
Stay healthy
San Francisco has two regular season games left before the postseason. They have to make sure they’re healthy going into the playoffs, and that starts at cornerback where Richard Sherman will return after a one week absence to nurse a hamstring strain. Sherman was supposed to miss multiple weeks, but he’s not on the injury report and will start against the Rams. San Francisco’s defense needs him on the boundary, and his health is vital for the team’s success Saturday and long term.
