3 Defensive Keys for the Sooners when they play Western Carolina University

What does the Sooners’ defense need to do to rebound from a disappointing week 1 performance vs. Tulane? Here are 3 keys for their matchup with WCU.

Trench Warfare

Oklahoma has a significant advantage in size and raw talent on both sides of line of scrimmage.

The first line of defense is the most important. Nik Bonitto, Isaiah Thomas, Perrion Winfrey and Jalen Redmond must dominate. These guys all flashed last Saturday against Tulane but it must happen from the start and they must set the tone for the guys that will spell them. This defense is spearheaded by the defensive front and everything else flows from their ability to control things.

WCU’s starting QB is a big guy. Rogan Wells sits at 6’4 and north of 200 pounds. Collapse the pocket and get him outside of it and force him to make plays with his feet or be accurate on the run. Double teaming the edge rushers will leave the interior open for linebacker blitzes and WCU can’t afford to do that.

Win the edge and win the day.
