A failure to sign Prescott to a long-term deal hurts in this regard. If the Cowboys had worked out a way to give Prescott a lump sum in signing bonus, his 2020 cap hit would not be as egregious. As it stands now, Prescott’s tag will fall somewhere between $28 million and $32 million based on the final numbers from the RFA window.

That means that the Cowboys will be spending far too much of their cap space at the position to even consider targeting starting-quality backups such as Cam Newton and Jameis Winston. There’s no way these players are inking contracts in the range Dallas can add to the position.

Blake Bortles (27), the former Jaguars starter would be the most experienced of the young players, with Cody Kessler (26) – recently released from the Patriots – another 30-and-under option. Mike Glennon (30), former starter in Tampa is also a consideration, as would be Geno Smith (29), and Brandon Allen (27).

From the older crowd, Joe Flacco (35) and Josh McCown (40) seem like the best options with Drew Stanton (35) rounding out the older crowd with Matt Moore (35) and Joe Webb (33).
