247Sports divulges letter grade for Iowa football’s 2024 season

247Sports’ final letter grade on Iowa football’s 2024 season is in.

Iowa football’s 2024 season included some great moments.

Junior running back Kaleb Johnson garnered consensus All-American honors after setting a new Iowa single-season records in points (138), total touchdowns (23) and rushing scores (21). Johnson ended his 2024 season with 1,537 rushing yards and a 6.4 yards per carry average.

Fifth-year linebacker Jay Higgins earned unanimous consensus All-American status after tallying 124 tackles, six quarterback hurries, five pass breakups, four interceptions, 2.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one sack.

Along the way, Iowa enjoyed trophy game wins over Minnesota (31-14), Wisconsin (42-10) and Nebraska (13-10). Iowa’s 42-10 win over Wisconsin was its largest margin of victory over the Badgers since 1968.

Still, there were some clunkers and missed opportunities mixed in.

The Hawkeyes lost three games in which they built 10-point leads (versus Iowa State, at UCLA and the TransPerfect Music City Bowl versus Missouri). Iowa’s 32-20 loss at eventual 5-7 Michigan State sticks out as an eyesore as well.

Iowa finished 8-5 (6-3 Big Ten). With the 2024 season in the rearview for Iowa, 247Sports shared its final Big Ten grades.

Letter Grade: B-

There are a couple of games that Iowa would undoubtedly like to have back, but this was another solid year for one of the Big Ten’s most consistent programs, and it featured a much-needed step forward on the offensive side of the ball.

First-year coordinator Tim Lester and his unit produced 27.7 points per game, which nobody would confuse with an elite mark but also which represents noticeable improvement after multiple years of ineptitude. Kaleb Johnson, a 1,500-yard rusher, was the catalyst behind it all as one of the nation’s most prolific ballcarriers. – Carter Bahns, 247Sports.

Iowa’s B- letter grade feels like an appropriate and respectable assessment of the Hawkeyes’ season.

It was certainly above average and featured some terrific individual milestones, but the aforementioned blown leads and the additional bad loss against the Spartans feels like Iowa left something on the table in 2024.

Iowa’s 2025 college football season opens on Aug. 30 versus the Albany Great Danes.
