We are officially 23 days away from Penn State football!
Today, we are going to talk about one of the current players who wear the number 23, John Lovett.
Lovett was a prolific player coming out of high school. 247 Sports ranked him as a four-star player while being the 18th ranked athlete in the nation. His talent certainly garnered attention from several teams across the NCAA. Before Lovett committed to Baylor, the Crystal Ball predictions actually had Lovett committing to play for former Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio at Michigan State.
At Baylor, Lovett didn’t quite make the progression the Bears had hoped for. His best year came in 2019, where he finished with 655 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Even though we didn’t see a ton of involvement from Lovett in the passing game at Baylor, he is a power back that will be a nice addition to Penn State’s run game. He currently sits as their complementary number two back to starting running back Noah Cain.
Lovett will spend his final year on the east coast playing for the Nittany Lions. After making minimal progression during his time at Baylor, Lovett hopes to make a solid impact on a talented Penn State offense.
Penn State averaged just 174.3 rushing yards per game lead by Journey Brown and Noah Cain. In 23 days, it will be a backfield lead by Cain and Lovett. Both running backs will be key players to watch throughout the 2021 season, as many hope they will both take leaps forward in their progression.
