2026’s top in-state prospect Derek Colman-Brusa could be a major addition to UW’s defense

Derek Coleman-Brusa offers plenty for the team to get excited about even this far out from his arriving on campus, locking him in now should be a major priority for the staff.

All eyes are currently focused on the Washington Huskies’ 2025 recruiting class, which is continuing to take shape. The team is sitting in the nation’s top 25 and is looking to improve on that standing as the year progresses. Recent commits Zaydrius Rainey-Sale, Ramonz Adams, and Caleb Smith have given the team plenty to work with on the defensive side of the ball.

On the other side, the Huskies secured an under-the-radar pickup with in-state offensive lineman Lowen Colman-Brusa.

The elder Colman-Brusa is a three-star with plenty of potential to slot in on the interior of the offensive line. After his commitment, many eyes turned to his younger brother Derek, a top 150 recruit in the 2026 class and the top recruit in the state of Washington. The Huskies are hoping that the brothers are a package deal and can elevate both sides of the line for years to come.

The younger Colman-Brusa is extremely dominant as just a sophomore, which is an exciting prospect for Jedd Fisch’s staff. He is much farther along in his development than would be expected. Colman-Brusa doesn’t possess a full repertoire of pass-rush moves just yet, but shows an effective rip move and converts speed to power for his bullrush extremely well.

Derek shines a run defender. He displays excellent tackling technique that allows him to capitalize on the numerous plays he makes it into the backfield. His overall strength against a lower level of competition also continually makes him a nightmare for opposing offenses to block.

Judging from Colman-Brusa’s 19 tackles for loss and 14 sacks last season, he can be a true game wrecker. The Huskies have a number of bodies in the edge rusher room but no one player who stands out as the star that teams have to truly gameplan around and while Derek will not arrive on Montlake for two seasons, assuming he ends up committing, he could give the Huskies that player they are looking for.

For Fisch and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, seeing a player look so polished at a young age has to have them clamoring to get him on their squad. Locking Colman-Brusa in this early on and then watching his stock continue to move upwards the next two seasons could give the team an early headliner in the 2026 class.
