Tigers of the Game: Shades of ‘vintage’ Thorne graced Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday

Auburn football grabbed the season-opening win over Alabama A&M due in part to Thorne’s great passing.

Auburn quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] had a disappointing season in 2023 where he passed for just 1,755 yards and 16 touchdowns. [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] overhauled the receiving unit during the offseason in hopes of giving Thorne the opportunity to replicate his 2021 success when he passed for over 3,000 yards and led Michigan State to 11 wins and a Peach Bowl win.

It is still too early to tell if Thorne can bring Auburn similar success in 2024, but he has gotten off to a great start.

Thorne passed for 322 yards and four touchdowns in Auburn’s season-opening win over Alabama A&M on Saturday. Thorne eclipsed the 300-yard mark for the first time as a Tiger and his four touchdown passes are the most he has thrown since the 2022 season in Michigan State’s season-opening win over Western Michigan. It was his best performance in an Auburn uniform since he passed for 230 yards and three touchdowns against Mississippi State last October.

After the game, Thorne discussed his excitement of being able to connect on multiple deep passes.

“It was great, nice to see that we were able to take some shots down the field and connect on them and then obviously finish it the rest of the way and get in the endzone. It means a lot. You know it’s good to get out here and do it against another team and see it happen and it’s something we have to build on.”

Who are some other players that are worthy of a “Tiger of the Game” nod? Here are the players that caught the eyes of Auburn Wire writers Taylor Jones, Brian Hauch, Tyler Raley, and Auburn fans for their performance against Alabama A&M.

Following a strong scoring output, it is easy to see why the Auburn offense is earning a bulk of the attention. However, limiting Alabama A&M to three points and 242 yards can not go unnoticed. Jalen McLeod was Auburn’s top defensive player on Saturday after recording five tackles with two tackles for loss and a sack.

The “Freeze Four” had a stellar debut as [autotag]Malcolm Simmons[/autotag], [autotag]Perry Thompson[/autotag], [autotag]Bryce Cain[/autotag], and [autotag]Cam Coleman[/autotag] all logging at least one reception, with three of them finding the endzone.

However, it was Simmons that had the most impressive debut. Simmons hauled in a team-leading 91 receiving yards with an offensive touchdown. His first score came in the 3rd quarter when he recovered a blocked put in the end zone and earned his first receiving touchdown seven minutes later when he brought in a 57-yard pass from [autotag]Hank Brown[/autotag].

The debut of “Big Play Dre” was memorable. Penn State’s leading receiver from a year ago ended his first game in orange and blue with three catches for 80 yards and a team-leading two touchdowns. Look for Lambert-Smith to be a life force for Payton Thorne this season.

Auburn fans have spoken, and they have chosen quarterback Payton Thorne as the “Tiger of the Game” after his performance against Alabama A&M. To have a say in who wins next week’s “Tiger of the Game” award, visit Auburn Wire on X (formerly Twitter) after every game to cast your vote.

Here’s an updated look at how many “Tiger of the Game” honors each Auburn player has earned this season:

WATCH: Western Michigan DB goes viral by leapfrogging referee … after Wisconsin scored

We need a final piece of game clean-up after Wisconsin’s 28-14 season-opening victory over Western Michigan.

Western Michigan defensive back Nyquann Washington has gone viral, or at least a moment involving him has. It came as Wisconsin was completing a two-point conversion to WR Trech Kekahuna in the back of the end zone to extend its lead to 21-14.

After Kekahuna caught the pass, Washington played leap frog with the referee on the baseline.

Related: Big Ten Power Rankings after Week 1: Our first look at the expanded conference

The move looks more and more puzzling the slower you play the video. Washington is a full 7-8 feet behind the back judge as Kekahuna catches the pass. He then jogs forward and jumps over the referee, who had his eyes trained on whether the Wisconsin receiver completed the process of the catch.

There isn’t much else to share about this moment other than it has gotten millions of views on X since the game concluded. Of all the viral moments that can happen during a game, at least this one happened while Wisconsin was scoring points.

Like Caleb Williams, Miller Moss will step squarely into pressure

It’s go time for Miller Moss.

Whistle just dropped its latest original “Raw Talent series featuring Miller Moss, USC’s new starting quarterback.

The premiere episode features Moss, quarterback for the USC Trojans, as he shows the real sweat and tears required for his preparation in advance of the upcoming football season.

LSU has a secondary which faces a lot of questions after a brutal 2023 season. USC might want to run the ball most of the season, but in this particular game, the Trojans might need to focus on the LSU pass defense and see if they can make splash plays down the field. Moss can’t try to be the hero, but he needs to make the plays which are there for the taking.

After throwing a Holiday Bowl record six touchdown passes, it was clear who was next up after Caleb Williams at the quarterback position at USC. Here’s how junior signal caller Miller Moss is preparing to stand out against LSU to kick off this season for the Trojans.

10 ex-Broncos players with the biggest dead money cap hits in 2024

Russell Wilson ($53 million) isn’t the only ex-Bronco with a dead money cap hit this season. Here are the top ten.

When the Denver Broncos decided to move on from quarterback Russell Wilson this spring, they knew it would be a costly decision.

Wilson still had $85 million guaranteed over the next two years, money that would be paid to him regardless of whether or not he’s on the roster. When they released him, the Broncos took on the largest dead money cap hit in NFL history: $53 million this season and $32 million next season.

Wilson is not Denver’s only ex-player still counting against the team’s books this season. Here’s a look at the Broncos’ ten biggest dead money cap hits in 2024, courtesy of OverTheCap.com.

Broncos’ biggest dead money cap hits

  1. QB Russell Wilson: $53,000,000
  2. OLB Randy Gregory: $7,124,445
  3. WR Tim Patrick: $6,071,668
  4. DB Justin Simmons: $3,750,000
  5. RB Samaje Perine: $1,500,000
  6. K Brandon McManus: $1,231,250
  7. OLB Frank Clark: $1,125,000
  8. TE Chris Manhertz: $1,125,000
  9. DB Omar Brown: $231,666
  10. DL Angelo Blackson: $167,500

After setting the 53-man roster and 17-player practice squad, Denver is right up against the cap going into the 2024 season. There will be more breathing room next year, and the team will be completely free of Wilson’s contract in 2026. In the meantime, cap space is tight.

Las Vegas Aces at Phoenix Mercury odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Las Vegas Aces at Phoenix Mercury odds and lines, with WNBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Las Vegas Aces (19-12) and Phoenix Mercury (16-16) meet Sunday at Footprint Center in Phoenix. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Aces vs. Mercury odds, and make our expert WNBA picks and predictions.

Season series: Aces lead 2-1

The Aces rebounded from a 93-90 loss in Dallas to upend the visiting Atlanta Dream 83-72 on Friday as a 10.5-point favorite. The cover snapped an 0-9 against the spread (ATS) skid. The Under (164.5) cashed Friday, and the total has gone low at a 8-3 run across the past 11 outings.

The Mercury have dropped back-to-back games while going 0-3-1 ATS in the past 4 outings, while the Under is 3-1-1 in the previous 5 contests.

Phoenix suffered a 103-99 loss at home on June 13 in the most recent meeting, but the Mercury did hang on for a cover as a 6-point underdog as the Over (170.5) easily connected. Phoenix is 3-0 ATS in the 3 meetings with Las Vegas this season.

Aces at Mercury odds

Provided by FanDuel Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:41 a.m. ET.

  • Moneyline (ML): Aces -205 (bet $205 to win $100) | Mercury +164 (bet $100 to win $164)
  • Against the spread: Aces -4.5 (-106) | Mercury +4.5 (-114)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 169 (O: -110 | U: -110)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Aces at Mercury picks and predictions

Prediction

Mercury 85, Aces 81

Moneyline

Playing PHOENIX (+164) as moderate underdogs is a strong play. The Mercury have played the Aces (-205) tough all season. The way Las Vegas has been playing lately, there is no way you can trust it laying more than 2 times your potential return.

Against the spread

If you’re a little less adventurous, play PHOENIX +4.5 (-114) catching the points. It gives you a little leg room in the event of a Las Vegas -4.5 (-106) win by 4 or fewer points.

After all, the Aces are still just 1-9 ATS in the past 10 games, despite Friday’s cover against Atlanta. And Las Vegas is 0-3 ATS in 3 tries against Phoenix this season.

Over/Under

UNDER 169 (-110) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play here.

The Under is 3-1 in the past 4 games for the Aces, while going 8-3 across the previous 11 outings.

For the Mercury, the Under has hit at a 3-1-1 clip in the past 5 outings, while cashing at a 5-2 pace in the past 7 contests at Footprint Center.

Home Runs Prop Bets: Top Picks for Today

Marcell Ozuna, ATL (+240 Yes, -300 No)

Ozuna has uncharacteristically gone 11 games without a homer, but here’s a perfect spot for him. He’s 23-for-63 with six homers lifetime against Phillies starter Aaron Nola, good for a career OPS over 1.100. Nola pitched well in August (4 homers allowed and a 2.70 ERA in five starts), but these career splits are too much to look past.

Juan Soto, NYY (+280 Yes, -350 No)

Soto slugged nearly .600 in August, and we don’t think he’s slowing down anytime soon. He’s got a stellar matchup against Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas, owning a career .842 OPS with a homer and a double. Even better, Mikolas had a 6.39 ERA in August.

Gunnar Henderson, BAL (+310 Yes, -400 No)

We get one more game of the best power hitting team in baseball at Coors Field, and we’re taking advantage of it. Henderson had a slow August from a power perspective but is still a threat to go yard every time up — especially against righties (.559 SLG, 25 homers).

Mookie Betts, LAD (+440 Yes, -625 No)

The power came back for Mookie Betts in August to the tune of four homers, four doubles and a .500 SLG. We expect that to continue — evidenced by the fact he went yard on Saturday night — in a matchup against Arizona starter Brandon Pfaadt. Betts is 3-for-9 with a double lifetime against him, and Pfaadt has allowed has allowed a homer in each of his last four starts.

Great Britain & Ireland holds off late United States charge to win 2024 Curtis Cup

It’s GB&I’s first Curtis Cup win since 2016.

Mimi Rhodes gave a subtle, but powerful fist pump, but her teammates reactions told the story.

The players from Great Britain & Ireland stood next to the 17th green, and they knew how good Rhodes’ par putt was to halve the hole. It was enough to secure, at worst, a half point. But that’s all Rhodes needed.

GB&I won its first Curtis Cup in eight years on Sunday, topping the Americans 10 ½ -9 ½ at Sunningdale in England. On a day when World No. 1 Lottie Woad and fellow stalwart Hannah Darling lost their singles matches for the hosts, it was the likes of Mimi Rhodes, her sister Patience, Sara Byrne and Lorna McClymont who carried GB&I to their ninth victory in the biennial competition.

Curtis Cup: Best photos from Sunningdale

Even with a young and inexperienced team, the Americans came into the Curtis Cup as favorites. Rachel Kuehn, playing in her third Curtis Cup, was in the anchor match Sunday and won 3 and 2 against Aine Donegan, but she was the lone player with experience in the international competition that mimics the Solheim Cup.

The young Americans, like 15-year-old Asterisk Talley and incoming USC freshman Jasmine Koo, played well. Talley knocked off Load 3 and 2 in singles while Koo topped Beth Coulter 4 and 3. However, a couple of the veterans, who waited to turn professional for a shot to play on the Curtis Cup team, were unable to win down the stretch.

The 2023 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion, Megan Schofill, lost 3 and 2 to Lorna McClymont. Earlier this summer, McClymont lost to Melanie Green in the final of the Women’s Amateur Championship. The win helped Green punch her ticket on the U.S. Curtis Cup team, but on Sunday, she halved her match against Mimi Rhodes in what turned out to be the clincher.

In the left trees with no second shot on the penultimate hole holding a 1-up lead, Rhodes had to punch out into the fairway for her third. She hit a brilliant shot beneath the hole to roughly 15 feet.

Green, about 40 yards further up the fairway, had a green light to try to tie the match. Her attempt sailed long and left but remained on the green.

Green’s birdie putt trickled close to the hole but didn’t fall. Rhodes responded, pouring hers in to clinch at least a half point and the ninth Curtis Cup win all-time for GB&I. Green won the closing 18th to in fact halve the match, but the U.S. fell half a point short of retaining the cup.

The Americans now own a 31-9-3 lead in the biennial competition.

How former Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz performed in Florida’s Week 1 loss to Miami

Former Badgers quarterback Graham Mertz injured in Florida Week 1 loss to Miami

It was a forgettable start to the 2024 season for the Florida Gators and former Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz.

The team fell 41-17 to No. 19 Miami, while the former Badger left the game late in the third quarter with a head injury. His afternoon ended with only 11 completions on 20 attempts for 91 yards and an interception.

Florida head coach Billy Napier said postgame that Mertz was diagnosed with a concussion. The hit came as he was sandwiched between two Miami defenders after he had released a pass — a pass that went on to be intercepted.

The afternoon was a disastrous start to what lines up to be a rough season for the Gators. Napier has expressed confidence in the veteran quarterback throughout the offseason. That confidence may not matter with the team off to an 0-1 start with games still remaining against No. 20 Texas A&M, No. 15 Tennessee, No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Texas, No. 13 LSU, No. 6 Ole Miss and No. 10 Florida State.

It’s hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel for the Gators in 2024.

Five-star true freshman D.J. Lagway took over for Mertz after his injury and played the entire fourth quarter. Lagway’s college debut finished with 3/6 passing for 31 yards and one interception, plus 20 rushing yards on four carries.

Next up for Florida is a home game against Samford before the gauntlet schedule continues. It will be worth monitoring whether Mertz is cleared in time to play.
