2023 NFL draft: Colts select OT Blake Freeland with No. 106 pick

BREAKING: Colts select BYU OT Blake Freeland with No. 106 pick.

The Indianapolis Colts selected BYU offensive tackle Blake Freeland with the No. 106 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

After addressing some big needs on Days 1 and 2, the Colts continue the trend by taking an athletic mover who tested extremely well at the NFL combine.

A four-year starter at BYU, Freeland was a team captain in 2022. He spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career as the starting right tackle and the final two seasons at left tackle.

Freeland measured in at 6-foot-7 and 302 pounds with 33.75-inch arms. He posted a 4.98 in the 40-yard dash to go along with a 37-inch vertical jump and 10-foot broad jump. Most importantly, he posted a 4.42 in the short shuttle at his pro day.

Freeland is a project, but he has potential to be a solid swing tackle considering his size, athleticism and length. He moves extremely well but needs to work on keeping his pads low while refining his technique, especially when it comes to strike points with his hands.

With Bernhard Raimann and Braden Smith at the tackle positions, Freeland could compete immediately for the swing tackle role behind them while he develops.
