Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez still hungry, still working, still winning

Roman Gonzalez fooled a lot of people when he rebounded from back-to-back losses to regain his place among the best 115-pounders.

Roman Gonzalez was asked who would win a particular matchup: the 24-year-old version of himself vs. the current 34-year-old model.

“Chocolatito” smiled and didn’t hesitate to answer. “I think both ages would win,” he told Boxing Junkie through a translator. That’s his way of saying he can still beat elite opposition, such as Julio Cesar Martinez on Saturday in San Diego. And no one would argue with him, even at an age when most little men are retired.

That doesn’t mean he doesn’t feel 34. He does. He just has to listen to his body more than he once did, work smarter, allow himself time to recover.

“It’s not the same,” he said. “It’s a difficult stage. I’ve already gone through a lot of cartridges. And I’m thankful for what I’ve done. I’m going to keep working until I can no longer work. … When you’re young, you have more everything. You’re strong, you have reflexes.

“In this camp, we work on being more intelligent, things like that. And we’ll keep going, all with the strength of God.”

You know it’s remarkable that Gonzalez (50-3, 41 KOs) is still going strong if you’ve followed his career.

The 5-foot-3 Nicaraguan, a protégé of his late countryman Alexis Arguello, won titles in four divisions and built a Hall of Fame career with a high-powered motor and the ability to hurt anyone he hits between 2005 and 2017

Then, in 2017, he lost back-to-back fights to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, the second by a brutal fourth-round knockout.

He attributed his troubles to the sudden death of his longtime trainer and friend Arnulfo Obando in November 2016, four months before the first fight with Sor Rungvisai. Still, everyone wondered whether his championship years were behind him as he moved into his 30s.

They weren’t.

Gonzalez, who now works with trainer Marcos Caballero, won two fights by stoppage to earn a shot at unbeaten WBA titleholder Khalid Yafai and scored a vintage ninth-round knockout to climb back to the top of the 115-pound division.

And while he lost a disputed decision to rival Juan Francisco Estrada in his most-recent fight, a year ago, he proved in that fight that he remains near his best.

How did it do it? “A lot of desire,” he said.

Gonzalez was scheduled to face Estrada on Saturday in what would’ve been the rubber match in their trilogy but Estrada pulled out with COVID-19, after which Martinez, a flyweight titleholder, agreed to step in.

He would’ve liked the opportunity to set things right after his disappointment against Estrada in March of last year but he’s not obsessed with the idea. He feels he has nothing to prove.

“If they give me that opportunity, yes. If not, it’s fine,” he said and then added with a smirk. “I’ll take the fight that comes – as long as they pay me.”

Gonzalez will be paid handsomely to take on Martinez, a formidable fighter who was outpointed in his pro debut and hasn’t lost since.

And while Martinez is moving up in weight for the bout, that shouldn’t be a problem for him even against a physical fighter like Gonzalez. The Mexican has weighed more than 112 pounds for 12 of his 19 fights.

Martinez probably isn’t quite as good as the current version of Estrada but Gonzalez is preparing for him as if he is. He was asked whether he saw Martinez as a legitimate threat.

“All of them are,” he said. “The only thing I have in my favor is my conditioning. That’s what’s going to help me do my job the night of the fight. That’s been the thing that has helped me throughout my career.”

Indeed, Martinez had better be at his best because Chocolatito is coming.

Report: Ex-UFC champ Cain Velasquez involved in Bay Area shooting

Cain Velasquez was involved in a shooting that left one man injured with “non-life threatening injuries,” according to a report.

Former UFC heavyweight champion [autotag]Cain Velasquez[/autotag] was involved in a shooting Monday that left one man injured.

NBC Bay Area, citing “sources with direct knowledge of the investigation,” confirmed Velasquez’s involvement in Morgan Hill, Calif., although it’s unclear how he was involved. The San Jose Police Department is investigating the shooting and did not provide details regarding Velasquez.

The San Jose police media relations office tweeted that the injured man was shot “at least once” near the intersection of Monterey Highway and Bailey Avenue. He was “transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injures.” One suspect was in police custody, but a motive was unknown. The shooting was reported at 3:14 p.m. local time, police said.

Velasquez, 39, trains at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, about 25 miles north of where the shooting happened. He was born in Salinas, roughly 40 miles south of Morgan Hill.

Velasquez hasn’t competed in MMA since a 26-second knockout loss to current heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in February 2019. Since then he’s dabbled in professional wrestling with WWE, as well as in Mexico.

Although Velasquez is believed to be retired from MMA, AKA head coach Javier Mendez recently told MMA Junkie that “he’s got it if he wants it” with regard to a potential return to the cage.

Velasquez was a two-time UFC heavyweight champion. Various injuries plagued him throughout his career.

How to Watch, listen to Oklahoma Women’s basketball vs Oklahoma State on Wednesday

The Sooners look to finish off a very strong regular season with a top 4 finish in the Big 12 starting with a rematch of a rivalry game.

While they are all but a guaranteed lock for the NCAA Tournament, The Oklahoma women’s basketball team is chasing much more than just a tournament berth. They want meaningful results in the tournament and they can start by pushing forward the last week of the regular season.

They are already slotted in as one of the 16 best seeds if the tournament started today according to the official March Madness account.

That shouldn’t matter to the women in Crimson and Cream as they are still fighting for seeding in the Big 12 tournament and trying to raise their stock to for their eventual NCAA Tournament seeding. They take the court fresh off of a major win against a scrappy Kansas State team that pushed the Sooners to the brink this past Sunday.

Senior guard Taylor Robertson was the hero with a buzzer-beating corner three and the Sooners picked up their second straight win. They head to Stillwater for a Bedlam rematch and look to complete a series sweep of their in-state rivals.

Oklahoma State enters as the 9th place team in the Big 12 and looks to salvage a part of their season with an upset win against their rivals. Lauren Fields leads the Cowgirls in points at 16.3 points per game.

San Diego State’s (19-7, 11-4) last road trip to the Mountain Time Zone results in a 73-66 victory over the Wyoming Cowboys (23-6, 12-4). Each visit to arenas above sea-level prior resulted in a loss, but Brian Dutcher prepared his players this round for a heavyweight match.

The thin Rocky Mountain air fueled a San Diego State team determined to walk out a winner. Matt Bradley made his presence known to fans and scored a career-high 30 points, 20 of those points came in the first half. The senior shot came out the gates hot, shooting 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, including a Damian Lillard-like jumper.

Before the end of the first half, San Diego State shot 53.6 percent from the field, 10-of-14 from the perimeter, and recorded 11 points off turnovers.

Cowboys coach Jeff Linder had his team throw every counter punch they had against their opponent. Hunter Maldonado played a full 40-minute game and recorded a triple-double, sophomore Graham Ike had a double-double, and two other Cowboys scored 10-plus points. Wyoming battled back every time SDSU started to pull away. They never let the Aztecs lead more than 11 points, and forced their visitors back to earth, keeping them at 30-percent shooting in the second half.

Wyoming fans were trying to will their squad back into the game, as a fan was ejected for screaming in the face of Aztec Lamont Butler.

Wyoming got close late in the second half and closed the deficit to 67-66 with 1:20 left, but the Aztecs figured out how to close this game out. Trey Pulliam with two clutch field goals that sealed the deal for the Aztecs, especially a mid-range jumper to put the Aztecs up five under 30 seconds left.

San Diego State emerged victorious as they held the lead for 33 minutes and continue their 34-game win streak when leading with five minutes to play. They came out strong and held on despite showing exhaustion in the final minutes of the game. The Aztecs proved they belonged in the NCAA Tournament on Monday night/

A standout local safety is set for a return trip to Tiger Town soon.

Travon West from nearby Wren High School (Piedmont, S.C.) plans to make a recruiting visit to Clemson and take in the Tigers’ spring practice on Saturday, March 12.

“I’m very excited to get back and finally get to see the changes that have been made since (Brent) Venables left,” West told The Clemson Insider.

West camped at Clemson last summer before making his way to Death Valley last season as an unofficial visitor for both the Georgia Tech and Wake Forest games.

The 6-foot, 170-pound junior has since stayed in touch with Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed, though West has communicated more of late with Wes Goodwin.

“Just conversations about how everything is going and looking forward to meeting each other in person,” West said of his chats with Goodwin.

Clemson’s new defensive coordinator has already made a good impression on West even though they haven’t met quite yet.

“Coach Goodwin seems like a great coach that everyone can trust and count on to have a good time with,” West said.

Wake Forest handed West his latest offer last week, joining Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Kansas State, East Carolina, Georgia State, Troy, Charlotte, Marshall, Old Dominion and Eastern Kentucky on his offer list. He feels Wake Forest and Kansas State are showing him the most love and recruiting him the hardest at this point in the process.

West played in all three phases of the game for Wren as a junior last season – lining up at safety, cornerback and running back, in addition to seeing action on special teams as a return man – and posted 86 tackles, six interceptions and 709 all-purpose yards.

Panthers reportedly ‘dead-set’ on drafting OL in 1st round

According to Daniel Jeremiah, the Panthers are zeroing in on an offensive lineman with the sixth overall pick—even if that means making a reach.

The Carolina Panthers might be thinking that enough is enough and it’s time for a change. So don’t be surprised if they rocket up to the podium for an offensive lineman with their first-round pick.

NFL media analyst Daniel Jeremiah joined The Rich Eisen Show on Monday to do what he does best and spit some nuggets on the draft. While discussing the logic behind his latest mock, specifically with his selection for the New York Giants at No. 5, Jeremiah gave us one of those nuggets on the Panthers—who may be zeroed in on a hog molly one way or another.

“Carolina, from everything I’ve been told—who picks right behind them [New York]—they are dead-set on the offensive line,” he said. “And to me it was like—put to me from somebody who’s tight in there with those guys—is no matter what give them an offensive linemen, even if you think it’s a reach.”

They may not really have to reach. The draft’s top linemen—Alabama’s Evan Neal, North Carolina State’s Ikem Ekwonu and Mississippi State’s Charles Cross—would, at least to this point, each be a fine combination of value meeting need. Even University of Iowa center Tyler Linderbaum, a Kyle Pitts-esque prospect at his position—could work himself into the conversation.

But if they do reach, it’ll be a contradiction of what head coach Matt Rhule preached last season—a focus on taking the best player available. As he summated, free agency is there to fill holes and the draft is there to add talent.

So with 2022 being a crucial campaign for Rhule, perhaps he’ll abandon that philosophy—possibly at the expense of the franchise’s future—to get an immediate fix on the offensive line.
